A wood-fired pizza oven is a dream if you want to make traditional pizzas. Placing one outdoors where you and your family and friends can sit and chat on a nice evening makes those pizzas even better. What doesn't make those pizzas better is poor placement of the pizza oven, sending smoke into your home and overheating nearby greenery. When you have an outdoor kitchen—especially with wood-burning appliances like that pizza oven—placement is everything. Not only do you want the oven and patio to look good, but you also want the landscaping and your home to remain safe.
Keep It Away From All Plants
When you have your yard and patio landscaped, make sure there is ample room around the oven that is clear of plants. No overhanging tree branches, no willowy grasses that lean toward the oven and end up a few inches away, not even a potted plant next to the oven. This is wood-fired and as such, there is always the risk of a spark flying out, or the outside becoming hot enough to catch something on fire. Modern wood-fired ovens do have some safety features, but you have to treat yours like an open bonfire in the name of safety.
Also, if you moved your kitchen range outdoors, would you place it near plants? Of course not; you'd keep it as far away as possible given how hot the burners and the outside of the oven can get. Why would you put a wood-fired oven any closer?
Ensure It's on a Fire-Resistant Base
The oven needs to be on a fire-resistant base material, such as a concrete patio. Obviously, it's not going on grass, but it shouldn't sit on dirt, either. Weed seeds may be lurking, ready to sprout, and rain can erode the dirt, making the ground uneven. You need that hard surface like concrete, stone pavers, and so on.
Look at Where the Smoke Can Go
A wood-fired appliance will produce smoke, and you need to be sure the oven is far enough away from your home so that smoke does not blow inside. You can't control the wind, so smoke may end up blowing toward your home. This way, if smoke does head toward your home, it doesn't all go inside and instead dissipates before getting to a window or door.
When you arrange for landscaping, let the designer or landscapers know that you plan to have this outdoor oven and possibly other kitchen elements. The designer or landscaper can create a landscaping plan that gives you a roomy outdoor kitchen with that pizza oven and plenty of space between it and the plants in your yard.
